SMARTBODY MOVEMENT
Experienced instruction and artistry…in a league of its own!

OUR STUDIO PHILOSOPHY

The human body is designed to move fluidly and breathe deeply on a daily basis. When we don’t provide our body with the activity it needs, our muscles stiffen, our frames become heavy, we lose our sense of dynamic overall body movement in space. But, we have the power to reverse these trends to create strong, lean bodies with balanced, relaxed minds. At Smartbody Movement, we aim to help you achieve wellness with our expertise teaching. We engage your mind with the physical activity of a Pilates and GYROTONIC® workout. We teach you how to MOVE YOUR WHOLE BODY in class and out…because the balanced moving body is what can carry you through life with grace and ease!

The center and its instructors promote the
Classical Pilates Method, Authentic Pilates™, GYROTONIC®, and GYROKINESIS® as a movement system that improves your total body awareness. Our comprehensive programs ensure that a client understands the proper mechanics that go into a workout both on the apparatus and on the mat. Clients develop better posture and the health benefits that come with achieving more integrated movement in daily life. Students at all fitness levels are welcome. Whether you are a beginner, a seasoned professional or someone who seeks post-rehabilitative care, you will find the perfect level of instruction for you.

When you first visit our studio, you will receive an in-depth assessment that will allow us to create a specialized workout plan that addresses your specific:
- posture, movement patterns, and body type
- pre-existing conditions, if any
- lifestyle
- health goals
- budget

You may attend one-on-one, semi-private or group mat classes in
Pilates, GYROTONIC®, and GYROKINESIS®. Our classes never contain more than six clients, which allows our instructors to work closely with each student. All of our clients in group mat classes have taken private lessons prior or use the mat class to supplement their other apparatus sessions in their weekly routine.

Because we are so completely involved with the development of your wellness plan, we can help you to alter your routine at any time to accommodate your increased fitness level or other changes that may occur in your life. This dynamic approach means that you will never plateau, but will continually challenge yourself to achieve maximum health and wellbeing.

When you commit to regular
Pilates, GYROTONIC®, and GYROKINESIS® lessons, you will be giving yourself the physical and mental tools to:
- breathe with core support
- balance better
- move dynamically from postural muscles
- improve range of fluid motion
- perceive space with a new awareness
- initiate movement from your center
- remain physically coordinated and fit
- be more comfortable in your body
- achieve a stronger back, and long lean lines
- achieve evenly developed muscle tone

After years of aerobic and weight training combined with musical practice and the resultant hip, knee and shoulder problems, Karen discovered the healing properties of the mind/body method of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates. As music is a discipline, learning to move from the center of the body and engaging one’s mind to stretch, gain strength and control the body – the hallmarks of the Pilates method - are a discipline, as well.

Karen is the Associate Director for Faculty and Guest Artists at the Tanglewood Music Center (the BSO’s academy for advanced musical study) an activity of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She received degrees in Performance and Music Education from the New England Conservatory of Music.
