GYROKINESIS®
Gyrokinesis is a
machine-free, floor-based practice, which usually
takes the form of a 90-minute mat class. Developed
as the root practice of Julia Horvath’s Gyrotonic
method, it is an open chain form of body
conditioning, in which breathing is used to
coordinate fluid movement transitions. In
conjunction with your breath, your body is trained
to work against itself, in order to create
stability, mobility and resistance.
Gyrokinesis will make you less vulnerable to
injuries, stress and micro-traumas by increasing
your spinal column’s functional ability. Being
able to complete multiple joint movements without
compression gives you extraordinary flexibility
and capability. At the practice’s heart are seven
spinal movement principles:
- bending forward
- extending backward
- side-bending the right
- side-bending to the left
- rotating to the right
- rotating to the left
- circular motion
A typical class begins with you sitting on a
chair or stool and encompasses kneeling, lying
down, and standing movement progressions. The
practice will allow you to:
- free up tightness or restrictions in the body
- restore smooth movement quality
- promote fuller breathing capacity
- improve upright balance
